Digital Wedding Photography
Digital photography vs. film is a big deal for most brides choosing a photographer. Really, it should not be any issue at all. Digital wedding photography has many benefits that increase workflow and ease of use, which hopefully leads to better photographs. This really depends on the individual digital or non - digital photographer.
Advantages of digital wedding photography include faster post-production (no film to scan in digitally), ease for posting online, negatives in the form of a DVD, and more photos that can be taken on the day of the wedding. Digital wedding photographers have been known to take up to 3,000 bridal images on a single day. For non - digital wedding photographers, no one would ever use up almost 100 rolls of 35mm film in one day.
Documentary photojournalism is a style of photography that has minimal intrusion. Similar to a media photographer recording a news event, the wedding photographer will rarely suggest traditional poses. Instead, the documentary photojournalist will simply record the events of the wedding day. I personally like to call it, "a fly on the wall technique."
Wedding photojournalism is similar to documentary photojournalism - except it has an artistic approach. A wedding photographer may lay on the floor, hop on a chair or tilt the camera to photograph a wedding. Different planes of field offer different perspectives. It adds richness to all of the wedding pictures.
Contemporary wedding photography involves having the cutting edge in photographic techniques and styles. Currently this involves informal photojournalism (whether posed or not) that gives more genuine emotions and reactions. From here artistic styles may or may not be applied to the original image to enhance the effect of the photograph. Most of contemporary wedding photography aims for candid shots from a distance, usually catching original moments.
Posed photography, such as in formals, are usually only for family portraits. Even bride and groom pictures are done using posed photojournalism, where the photographer instructs the couple initially and then captures the couple being natural in that position. Here in Boston and most of the east coast, photographers at the high-end all use posed photojournalism combined with photojournalistic candid photos and artistic, dramatic perspectives.
Artistic Photographic Style
Artistic wedding photography is generally opposite to documentary wedding photography. It involves artistic angles and lighting that pull more out of the picture than usual. This also involves more post production to stylize the photos, such as with black and white, sepia, glows, selective colors, and vignetting. Black and white is not necessarily artistic photography (since it is the original medium of photography) but can be used in varying ways using digital techniques to create something more artistic than the original image. You can see here my explanation on Black and White wedding photography . You will find that most photographers in Boston and Cambridge use B&W effectively in their portfolios.

A short Hindu wedding ceremony
Traditional Hindu wedding ceremonies can last for days and involve much ritual in Sanskrit which may be understood only by the priest conducting the service. This ceremony is considerably shorter and is intended to be understandable even to a non-Indian audience, making it suitable for intercultural or mixed Hindu/non-Hindu marriages. The couple for whom it was originally written based it on the Gujarati Brahmin traditions of the bride's family with a few touches from Unitarian and secular wedding services familiar to the groom's family. It includes three spots to insert optional readings and musical performances of your choosing.
The priest in this ceremony need not be formally trained as a Hindu priest. He or she should be familiar with Hindu weddings and comfortable acting as a master of ceremonies, guiding the participants through their parts and explaining the meaning of the service to the audience. It's okay if the priest keeps the script in hand during the ceremony.

Hindu weddings are supposed to take place outside, on the earth, under a canopy known as a mandap. If that's not possible, you can build a mandap inside and pretend you're outdoors. Seating under the mandap can be on the ground (carpets or mats would be a good idea) or on chairs.
Front and center under the mandap is the sacred fire. The fire can be small and confined to a brazier or dish for safety.
The groom's party is supposed to arrive at the wedding spot in a procession, so it's good to have a convenient assembly location nearby.

Traditionally, the bride wears a red or red and white sari. The sari should be draped modestly over her hair. The groom wears a kafni (long shirt extending to the knees) with pijamo (leggings) or dhoti (sort of an overgrown loincloth). The groom might also wear a turban.
Of course, in an adapted ceremony like this one great liberties can be taken with wardrobe. One rule which shouldn't be broken is that anyone who enters the mandap or wedding canopy must have on sandals or slip-on shoes which can be easily removed (no shoes in the mandap!). In addition, it's a good idea to avoid much black.
One feature of the bride's wardrobe which has become popular abroad is the use of henna or mehndi to decorate her hands and feet. It's said that you can tell how well a new bride is being treated by her in-laws from how long it takes for the mehndi to wear off. Mehndi treatments are increasingly available in salons or you can get mehndi mix at any Indian grocery store for a do-it-yourself job. (But be sure to practice on paper first! Mehndi doesn't wash off.)
Script
Groom's party assembles a few minutes before scheduled ceremony time at a convenient spot near ceremony location. (E.g., a neighbor's house or a parking lot around the corner.) Older members of the party may go on to the ceremony location to be seated. Groom is holding a coconut and bride's garland.
Groom's party walks in a procession to ceremony location. (For extra credit, groom rides on a horse or better yet an elephant!) Groom is received by bride's mother who applies kumkum to his forehead. Groom bows to bride's mother and gives her coconut.
Bride's parents escort groom and best man to the mandap. Groom's party is seated nearby.
After groom is in position in the mandap, bride comes out carrying groom's garland, escorted by maternal uncle, optionally preceded by flower girls.
Priest says:
We have come together to wed (bride), daughter of (bride's parents), to (groom), son of (groom's parents). Today they build together the foundation of their marriage upon the earth, in the presence of the sacred fire and the radiant sun, among their family and friends.
Bride and groom are seated facing one another under the mandap. Chorus sings the slokas:
Invocation to Lord Ganesha: Vignesh varaia varadaia sukhapriyaya...
Invocation to Saraswati: Yakundendutusharahara dhawala...
Prayer for harmony: Om sahana vavatu...
Bride garlands groom. Groom garlands bride.
Reading #1.
Bride's parents wash bride's and groom's hands and feet, apply kumkum and give flowers. (Bride's mother does this to bride, bride's father to groom.)
Bride's parents address audience:
I, (name), son/daughter of (grandparents' names), approve the wedding of my daughter, (bride's name), to (groom's name).
Groom says:
I, (groom's name), take you, (bride's name), into my heart as my wife.
Bride says:
I, (bride's name), take you, (groom's name), into my heart as my husband.
Priest says:
A circle is the symbol of the sun and the earth and the universe. It is a symbol of holiness and of perfection and of peace. In these rings it is the symbol of unity, in which your lives are now joined in one unbroken circle, in which, wherever you go, you will always return to one another and to your togetherness.
Bride and groom exchange rings.
Priest puts varamala (sacred rope) around bride's and groom's necks. They're now married!
The couple, who had been sitting facing one another, now sit down side by side. Bride's father puts bride's hand in groom's.
Song or musical performance. (Traditionally this is the time to sing a mangalashtak, a poem composed specially for the occasion.)
Bride cups her hands and places them in groom's cupped hands. Bride's brother puts rice in bride's hands. Together bride and groom pour the mixture into the fire.
Bride and groom walk around the fire four times, alternating in who leads. Priest says:
Om Svaha! With the first turn, we pray for happiness in the union of the couple.
Om Svaha! With the second turn, we pray for the long life of the couple.
Om Svaha! With the third turn, we pray for the healthy life of the couple.
Om Svaha! With the fourth turn, we pray for the happiness and health of the couple.
The bride and groom sit down. (Here's a fun part: whoever sits down first will be the boss in the marriage!) Groom presents a gift to the bride's brother.
Priest says:
Now is the time to confirm the marriage with the seven final steps.
Bride and groom rise and prepare to take seven steps. Priest continues:
I ask you, (bride) and (groom), to concentrate upon these seven vows as you take the seven steps:
May the couple be blessed with an abundance of food.
May the couple be strong and complement one another.
May the couple be blessed with prosperity.
May the couple be eternally happy.
May the couple be blessed with children.
Idea: one "blended family" we know of changed this to "May the couple be blessed with obedient children." :-)
May the couple live in perfect harmony.
May (bride) and (groom) always be the best of friends.
Optional step to shock the traditional Hindus: bride and groom steal a kiss!
Bride and groom feed each other sweets four times. Bride's mother gives groom a gift. Groom's mother comes to the mandap and puts the mangalsutra necklace around the bride's neck.

Style
Photographing a wedding is an honor, a privilege and a tremendous
responsibility. Through my photojournalistic, documentary style, I emphasize the
natural joy, beauty, and elegance of the day. I strive to preserve the emotions
of this special day with all the honesty, integrity and beauty that my clients
deserve.
Approach
I believe the true beauty of the wedding day is naturally reflected in the
movement, expression and gestures of those participating in and witnessing this
day. As a result, I prefer to remain as unobtrusive as possible throughout the
events I photograph, never attempting to stage my images.
Relationship
Establishing trust through open communication from the very beginning with my
clients is essential to creating a real relationship, and therefore the best
images I am able to make. As I aim to capture the unique essence of this special
occasion for you and your families, I feel it is critical to invest the time and
attention to get to know you as individuals, and to allow you to become
comfortable sharing this important day with me.
Wedding Traditions in Asia
There is something inherently mysterious and romantic about Asia…the mysterious Far East. And when it comes to weddings, the rich diversity of Asian cultures, traditions and religions makes for a wide variety of colorful and fascinating wedding customs.
In the land of the rising sun
In Japan, for instance, purple is the color of love and a young bride may choose to wear an elaborately-embroidered silk kimono covered in purple iris-flowers. Weddings are traditionally either Shinto, during which the natural spirits, the kami, are called upon to bless the couple, or it might be a Buddhist ceremony during which two strings of beads are interwoven, symbolizing the joining of two families into one.
The dragon and the phoenix
Chinese traditions held that the gift of a whole roast pig given by the groom’s family to the bride’s family was an appropriate engagement gift. The traditional wedding gown in China is bright red, symbolizing luck for the new couple. Chinese bridal gowns are traditionally adorned with elaborate golden phoenixes, chrysanthemums and peonies, symbols of wealth and good fortune. The groom traditionally wears a black silk coat over a robe embroidered with a dragon, and you can expect loud firecrackers at a Chinese wedding to scare off evil spirits.
The reception that goes on and on...
In Indonesia it is not uncommon for more than 1,000 guests to be invited to the wedding reception and it is customary for the bride and the groom to greet each guest in a long receiving line before the reception festivities can begin.
May good fortune always be yours.
In Korea it is traditional for a fortune-teller, known as a kung-hap, to look into the couple’s future before they are married in order to see if they will live harmoniously together. A harmonious union is very important since the engagement gifts alone for a traditional Korean wedding can cost upwards of $40,000.
A three-day wedding ceremony.
An early Filipino custom required the groom to throw a spear into the front steps of his intended-bride’s home. This was a dramatic symbol to everyone that she had been spoken for. Today this tradition has been replaced with a gold engagement ring. Today the majority of Filipino weddings are Catholic, but in days gone by a Filipino wedding lasted three days, with ceremonies performed each day until the third day when the couple joined hands and declared their love for each other three times and their hands were bound together with a chord and the priest declared them married.
The journey of a lifetime begins with milk and water.
In India and other countries with a Hindu culture it is considered bad luck for the bride and groom to see each other for several days before the wedding. As part of the marriage ceremony the bride’s parents wash the couple’s feet with milk and water as a symbol of purifying them for the journey of their new life together. As part of the ceremony the couple holds in their hands grains of rice and oats and green leaves, signifying wealth, good health and happiness.

Many Asian cultures, many traditions, but all are centered around the basic concept of a new beginning, a new journey down the path of life together, hand in hand, filled with love and a new commitment of two hearts joined forever as one.
Years ago in the heart of Boston’s financial district, Le
Meridien Hotel group owned an elegant European luxury hotel with
a historic exterior that looks like the Palazzo della
Cancelleria in Rome. Around 2003, the location was bought and
rebranded as the Langham
Boston Hotel. The red awnings on the outside are the same,
but the interior has been updated. Fast forward a few years and
Le Meridien brand gets back into the Boston area by buying the
former Hotel @ MIT which is now known as Le Méridien
Cambridge-MIT. It was renovated in the spring of 2009 with the
beautiful Anderson
Rooftop Garden perfect
for outdoor rooftop-like ceremonies and cocktail hour, an
adaptable loft, and updated wedding reception rooms including
the 160 capacity Hunsaker Ballroom and the smaller Florence
Luscomb Ballroom. This Cambridge hotel is also working on LEED
certification to be a “green” hotel so they win in my book.
Wedding photographers
for their wedding held this past Saturday. Panle got ready at
the Meridien, and wore a very classic, vintage wedding dress
previously worn by her mother in law. The wedding ceremony was
at the Ruggles
Baptist Church and
was translated in both English and Mandarin Chinese. After the
wedding I hopped in the back seat (if you’d even call it that!)
of a red Mini Cooper convertible John and Panle had rented from
Zipcar for the wedding day. John had got a wedding photography
permit for Boston Common so we were able to take photos without
any hassle on their wedding day. For more information about

here. The fee is $50 for Boston residents, and $100 if you
live anywhere else. After some time in the park, we headed down
Mass Ave. to the Charles River to get a few skyline photos of
the bride and groom on their wedding day. We returned to the
hotel and Panle changed in Chinese tradition changed into her
red qipao, 旗袍, or cheongsam. Cocktail hour was held on the
rooftop garden at the hotel followed by a reception filled with
accents of red, pink, orange, and the double happiness symbol 囍
along with some coordinating lighting design available by the

Hyatt Regency Cambridge Wedding: Neeta + Rich
On Saturday, I got to second shoot for one of my very favorite
people in the whole of the US: fellow photographer, Brit, lover
of beautiful shoes and fine booze, Leah
Haydock. Leah second
shot for me back in early July, and it was my turn to return
the favor … and what a fun favor it was! Neeta and Rich
were married at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge. It was a
joining of cultures (Neeta is Indian, Rich Korean) and a
festival of color. After a year of blue themed weddings, I
was so very ready for some shocking fuchsia, oooh yes!
I started my afternoon just as Neeta was about to get into her
gorgeous Maggie Sottero gown:
